If you’re just wondering why Munich’s Oktoberfest has become so popular that it’s visited by millions of guests from around the world every year, we have the smart answer: the world’s largest beer festival has a century-old history and you knows exactly how to cultivate the good old traditions here.
Every year in Munich it is very lively and amusing at the Oktoberfest, a lot of beer is served and drunk, people dance and sing. Within two weeks, Munich is a place of cozy get-togethers, where you meet old friends or make new friends.
With a few exceptions, the festival has always taken place at the Oktoberfest since its founding year and is held annually for two weeks from the end of September to the beginning of October. In the late 19th century, the Oktoberfest developed into a folk festival. Here are actors and musicians from all over Germany, famous breweries and farms, because the demand is growing from year to year. During the festive season, the Theresienwiese has become ever more colorful and amusing. What is interesting, however, is the fact that the people of Munich kept the old tradition of the Oktoberfest over the course of 200 years and developed it further.
Today, the good, old tradition continues to be maintained and Munich invites to the beer festival again this year! The city attracts more than six million visitors each year, coming to the Oktoberfest in Munich from various countries around the world. The events calendar of the Oktoberfest 2016 is just as crowded as the years before. One has thought of everything here, depending on your taste and preferences you will easily find what you are looking for at the Wiesn. Lots of good beer and Bavarian specialties and treats, lots of fun and great entertainment are already waiting for their first guests!
The events and highlights of the Oktoberfest are really numerous, but here I would just like to mention two of them, which closely combine history and tradition with our present.
All at the Oktoberfest have succumbed to the fever of traditional clothing! Yes, exactly, costumes are back in! If you look around at the Oktoberfest, you realize it right away – at the largest beer festival dirndl and Lederhosen are announced. Even more, here the last models are successfully presented and the competition is really amazing. The traditional dirndl dresses are subjected every year to the latest fashion trends. And what’s trendy this year, many Oktoberfest fans will be surprised. You can be very calm, because at the Oktoberfest everything is in – short and long Lederhosen, open-hearted and highly closed Dirndl. The old models are timeless and in high demand.
As I have already mentioned, old traditions live on at the Munich Oktoberfest. In May, this year’s beer queen was selected by online voting. But the guests in the old congress hall and ultimately the jury made the decision. Among the 116 applicants, the 22-year-old nurse Sabine-Anna Ullrich from Lower Franconia was selected as the Beer Queen 2016/2017. Until May 2017, the new beer queen will present the barley beverage in many countries, of course together with the Bavarian Brewery Association. As I said, old traditions live on! Happy and welcome in Munich!
